Bank accounts for ADGM companies
The step nobody controls and everybody underestimates. It is not an ADGM process, no free zone can accelerate it, and it is usually the longest part of the exercise.

Quick answer
How do you open a bank account for an ADGM company?
Through a bank, not through ADGM. Account opening is not part of the registration process — the Registration Authority incorporates and licenses the entity[ADGM RA — Registration & Incorporation], and the bank then applies its own onboarding, which is supervised by the Central Bank of the UAE[Central Bank of the UAE].
That separation is the single most important thing to understand about it. ADGM can register a company in 10 business days[ADGM — Setting up FAQs] and has no ability to make a bank move faster.
We do not publish bank requirements, timelines or minimum balances — no authority publishes them, they differ by bank and by applicant, and any figure here would be a guess.
Why this is not an ADGM question
Free zones market "bank account assistance" as though it were part of the package. It is not, and treating it as one leads to badly wrong timelines.
Banking in the UAE is regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE[Central Bank of the UAE]. An ADGM licence tells a bank the entity is real and properly constituted; it does not tell the bank to accept it, and it does not shorten the bank's own due diligence.
The honest sequencing is: ADGM registration is fast and predictable; the bank account is slow and variable; and the second is not downstream of the first in any way you control.
What determines the outcome
We can describe the shape of it without inventing specifics, because it follows from what any regulated bank must do.
Who is behind the entity. The ownership chain traced to ultimate beneficial owners. A company owned by two individuals is straightforward. A company owned by another company owned by a trust is a different exercise, and every layer needs to be evidenced. This is the same chain the Registration Authority wanted[ADGM — SPV brochure] — assembled once, it serves both.
Where the money comes from. "Savings" is not an answer. A traceable narrative — sale of a business, dividends from a named company, documented salary over time — with documents behind each step, is.
What the business actually does. Counterparties, jurisdictions, expected flows. A vague activity description is a problem here as much as it is at licensing.
Connection to the region. Which, if you hold an SPV, you have already had to demonstrate to the Registrar under the Nexus Requirement[ADGM RA — SPV Guidance Note].
The timeline problem
ADGM's stated expectation is approval within 10 business days for a complete registration application[ADGM — Setting up FAQs]. Nothing comparable exists for banking, because it depends on the bank, the structure and the applicant.
Three things follow:
- Start the conversation early. Not after the licence issues — while the structure is being decided, because a structure that is difficult to bank is worth knowing about before it exists.
- Expect to meet someone. ADGM does not require a visit to register[ADGM — Setting up FAQs]; banks frequently do require a signatory in person. Do not read "remote setup" as "remote banking".
- Budget calendar time, not effort. This step is largely out of your hands, which is exactly why it should be started first rather than last.
If the company already banks somewhere, the job is different
Everything above assumes a new entity opening a first account. A business moving into ADGM has the opposite problem — existing accounts, existing mandates, and a legal identity that is about to change underneath them.
ADGM's guidance for businesses re-registering sets out what the bank side involves[ADGM RA — Al Reem guidance note]:
- Tell the banks first. Notify the managers of every bank where existing accounts are held about the upcoming changes — before they happen, not after.
- Supply the migration evidence. All documentation confirming the entity's migration to ADGM, including constitutional documents and the commercial licence, and the ADGM-issued corporate documents once available.
- Change the account names where applicable.
- And ADGM's own caveat: additional rules may apply depending on specific bank policies.
The sequencing trap
Read the second and fourth points together. The ADGM corporate documents arrive once available — meaning after registration completes — but the bank's requirements are the bank's, and some will want to see them before they will amend a mandate.
There is a window, then, in which the entity has changed jurisdiction but the account still carries the old identity. Plan for it rather than discovering it: ask each bank, before you file, exactly what it needs and how long its own change-of-name process takes. A bank that takes six weeks to re-paper a mandate is not going to shorten that because your licence has already been issued.
Why continuation helps here
This is one of the clearer practical arguments for continuation over new registration. Under continuation the company continues to exist and its business dealings are intended to continue uninterrupted, with property and rights carrying across[ADGM RA — Al Reem guidance note] — so the conversation with the bank is an amendment.
Under new registration it is a different legal person, and that is not an amendment. It is a new account, new onboarding, and the full due diligence described above, with the added complication of explaining an entity that has no trading history while its predecessor does.
Why there are no numbers on this page
You will find pages quoting minimum balances, account-opening timelines and lists of banks that "accept" free zone companies. We publish none of that, and the reason is the same rule that governs the rest of this site.
No authority publishes it. Bank onboarding criteria, minimum balances and turnaround times are commercial, differ between institutions, change without notice, and are applied case by case. A figure on this page would be someone's anecdote presented as information.
It would also be the most damaging kind of wrong. A reader who budgets on a quoted minimum balance and then encounters a different one has been misled about the thing that actually gates their launch.
What we will do instead is tell you honestly, before you incorporate, if your structure looks difficult to bank — which is a more useful contribution than a number.
Making it easier
- Assemble the ownership chain once, properly. It serves the Registrar and the bank, and it is the most common cause of delay in both.
- Write the source-of-funds narrative before you need it, then find the documents that evidence each step.
- Describe the business precisely. The same discipline the activity description needs at licensing.
- Do not over-layer the structure without a reason. Every additional entity is another set of documents and another set of questions. If a layer is not doing work, it is costing you here.
- Keep the entity in good standing. Licence renewal and the separate data protection renewal[ADGM RA — Schedule of Fees] — a lapsed licence stops a banking conversation immediately.
Frequently asked questions
Can ADGM open a bank account for my company?
No. Account opening is not part of ADGM registration. The Registration Authority incorporates and licenses the entity; banks apply their own onboarding under Central Bank of the UAE supervision, and no free zone can accelerate it.
How long does it take to open a bank account for an ADGM company?
There is no published figure, because it depends on the bank, the structure and the applicant. It is routinely the longest step in the whole setup, and it should be started early rather than after the licence issues.
Do I need to visit the UAE to open a bank account?
ADGM does not require a visit to register a company, but banks frequently require a signatory to attend in person. Remote incorporation does not imply remote banking.
What is the minimum balance for an ADGM company bank account?
We do not publish one, because no authority does — minimum balances are commercial, differ between banks and change without notice. Any figure you see quoted is someone's anecdote rather than a rule.
